POLARIS™ Process Refractometer Series.
Vaisala K.K. has been expanding its business mainly in air environment measuring devices. However, it has now begun the development and sales of a new range of liquid concentration measuring devices, the process refractometer series “POLARIS.” We spoke with Keishi Natsui, an expert in liquid concentration measurement at Vaisala.
TA process refractometer is a concentration measuring device that continuously measures the concentration of liquid flowing in a pipe or tank.
The basic structure of Vaisala’s refractometers is a prism, LED, and optical image, and these three items are included in the sensor. The liquid contacts the prism and the refractometer calculates the concentration of the liquid.
One of the features of Vaisala refractometers is that they are not affected by bubble particles.
With conventional refractometers and other measurement methods, bubbles and fine particles in the liquid cause diffused reflection and make it difficult to measure the concentration.
Physically, there is the light that is irradiated from the LED and enters the liquid, and light that is reflected everywhere. It is important to accurately detect this critical angle, which is the boundary line. Our refractometers can clearly see the boundary.
The second feature is that there is no need for regular maintenance. There are no adjustment parts that need to be replaced on a regular basis.
The third feature is that our refractometers use a wide variety of liquid contact parts and there is a connection standard.
Conventional refractometers could only be mounted on pipes, but with Vaisala refractometers, it is possible, for example, to increase the insertion length and attach the device directly to a tank to accurately measure the inner stirring part of the tank. We can provide installation methods tailored to the customer’s process.
In addition, our refractometers adopt a core optics structure that is not affected by external vibrations and pressure.
Further, refractometers are greatly affected by temperature, so a thermometer is installed next to the prism, which is the detection unit, making accurate temperature correction possible.
An INDIGO industrial transmitter can also be used in conjunction with the signal from a conventional measuring device to create an efficient system with other measurement parameters.
The POLARIS Series offers seven types of products that are suitable for a wide variety of applications. The series covers a broad range of applications such as food, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, paper pulp, and semiconductors that require concentration measurement. These products are ideal not only for end users, but also for OEMs who work with equipment manufacturers.
The key phrase of our new refractometers is “No more misleading measurements.” We use the name POLARIS for the new series due to its meaning of “North Star”. The north star Polaris stays roughly the same place in the sky, giving a reliable way to find direction. The name process refractometer name Polaris represents liquid concentration measurements that do not drift. You can take stable and reliable measurements. We made the POLARIS Series with the intention of wanting to empower customers to be able to measure concentration with confidence. I sincerely hope you will make use of these products.
